‘All The Things You Are’ is a piece composed by Jerome Kern (lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II), and was first released in 1939.
It is a very calm jazz standard, here’s the structure:
| F-7 | Bb-7 | Eb7 | Abmaj7 | Dbmaj7 | G7 | Cmaj7 | Cmaj7 | C-7 | F-7 | Bb7 | Ebmaj7 | Abmaj7| D7 | Gmaj7 | Gmaj7 | A-7 | D7 | Gmaj7| Gmaj7 | F#-7 | B7 | Emaj7 | C+7 | F-7 | Bb-7 | Eb7 | Abmaj7 | Dbmaj7 | Db-7 | C-7 | Bo7 | Bb-7 | Eb7 | Abmaj7 | (G7 C7)|
As you can see, a lot of II-V-I action going on: a classic standard jazz.
As you can imagine a lot of famous jazz players have covered this piece. I will show some of my favorite versions.
One is a version played on the saxophone, by Charlie Parker, a saxophonist famous for his fast phrases.
Another one by the famous trumpeter Chet Baker and his quartet from the album ‘Out Of Nowhere: Chet Baker Quartet Live’. I really liked the very calm yet so convincing phrases here.
Finally, the Keith Jarret Trio live version is the most astounding I’ve ever listened to. Keith Jarret is a virtuoso, and I really like his fast but so expressive phrases. This version was recorded live in Tokyo, March 30, 1996 at hitomi Memorial hall.
